Getting closer to God

Fasting is a spiritual exercise. It makes our body and mind strong by disciplining it. Spiritual because it makes us look inward. Another spiritual practice is meditation. This also helps us to focus on our inner selves. We think that the world outside is real, but that is just a delusion. What is real is what exists inside each of us. There is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered.

The elusive Higgs Boson particle (also termed as the God particle) is just a wild goose chase. God is neither a particle nor a wave or a string. God is an experience and the highest form of this experience is love. Love is that which is felt, that which is shared and that which is given without any conditions. For many of us, the meaning of this will become clear when we leave this body.

For the remaining people, love can be experienced while living. The best expression of love is to do something for others. That is the shortcut. We should learn to love ourselves also. Remember this life is a gift given by God to realize him. Love has different forms. But the highest is the love for God or Bhakti, as they call it. When we die, we are left with nothing but love.

Sacrifice for a noble purpose is also love. Some shrinks term it as repression. They further call it as self-inflicting pain. But then what is physical exercise and fasting. The strength that we get when we sacrifice something for a higher good is enormous. And moving towards God is becoming strong in all its annotations. In body, mind and spirit alike. Sacrifice with perseverance always pays.

But it’s not easy. We require a lot of willpower and strength. And for those who do, remember, If Mohammed doesn’t go to the mountain, the mountain will come to him.

Happy Eid.
